Costello wanted it back and retrieved the fly when the tide was high enough to reach it.
"The fly had been hung up in the tree for two days," said Costello. "I figured the fly had been staring at the fish it wanted to catch while it was stuck up there."
His upbeat logic was prophetic. Just minutes after Kubota cast the fly into four feet of water, he hooked onto a freight train - a fish so big and strong that it peeled off all the fly line and 75 yards of backing from his reel. Costello was forced to quickly fire up the engine and chase the fish down.
After a stubborn, 10-minute struggle, the mammoth striper was brought to the boat with just a 20-pound leader.
"I knew right away it was the biggest striper I had ever hooked on my boat," Costello said. "It was so exciting. We carefully lifted it from the water, took pictures and quickly released the big, egg-laiden female."
