Assuming that you're not filling the spool totally with leadcore line, tie your backing to the spool by whatever knot is handy. This one, in the end, doesn't really matter.

Spool the necessary amount of backing onto your reel to leave enough room for the 100-yards of leadcore you'll be using. (When you are finished, you want your leadcore to fill the spool to within 1/4" of the edge.) Tie the leadcore to your backing with a barrel knot (or similar) and trim the ends fairly close. Continue to fill the spool with your leadcore until full as indicated above.

I love my Ambassadeur 6000 reels. They can handle big king salmon as well as walleye trolling. They also have line out alarms. The only thing they don't have is a line counter, but I added one and its all good.

Baitcast or spinning, lb test line - braided or not, - what gear ratios or minimum strength needed in a reel do I need to handle the weight?

me personally...id go with...

A large abu garcia baitcasting reel spooled with 80 lb test power pro (i think its 20 lb diameter). Abu garcias will do the trick. Ive been fishing muskies with em for years.

st. croix rod...st croix makes signature musky rods specially designed for muskies and theyre pretty high quality.

This reel is labeled as "Rainbow". Possibly made in Hong Kong.

One large enough to hold a decent length of 27 pound test lead core line. I usually lake fish. Reel must have a line out clicker and also would you recommend a level wind reel? I have been considering an Abu Garcia but have no opinion on the size. Thanks

You dont want to use a level wind with lead core, it'll wear the guide in no time. AVET is my favorite. Made in USA with USa made parts. Excellent warrantee. I have 4 and they are literally bomb proof. NO PLASTIC.

Most of the fish will max out at 50LB. Expect barracuda, Kingfish, mackerel, odd tarpon, odd snook.

A Penn 309 will hold over 300 yards of 30 pound line. That's more than you'll need for fish that size, so there's no reason to fill it with 500 yards of 20. So go with the 30. (If you have problems with bigger fish, I'm sure the reel is strong enough to handle 40 pound.)
