The hills have been soaked, the grass is electric green and the wildflowers have sprouted. All we need is a few radiant, warm, blue-sky days in a row and an eye-popping wildflower season appears to be at hand, the best since 2005.
Some coastal landscapes are already in first bloom. Other sites in the Bay Area don't come to life until well into March and April. In the mountains, spring arrives in stages from mid-April through July, extending from 3,000 feet in the Sierra foothills on up to the crest.
You can catch spring over and over again in the next five months, from coast to crest. It's also the time and place to see the most wildlife and catch the most fish. When the land wakes up, with all the fresh-sprouted vegetation, wildlife goes on a feeding frenzy and also bears its young. The same thing happens in lakes, as the water warms from 50 to 70 degrees, for bass and trout.
"We believe it's going to be a stunning wildflower season," said Shelly Lewis at the East Bay Regional Park District. "The hills are saturated. Now all we need is some sunshine."
