The alewives have already started their spring migrations back up their natal rivers to begin spawning. The stripers that feed on them are following them on in, making for some spectacular early season fishing.
Early on, try right below the dam in Lawrence. The shad are also in the waters as well.
This year, there has been a very early ice-out in all of the northern rivers. All of that rain we had just a few weeks ago wiped out the snow on the northern mountains and the ice from the lakes. This water released into the brooks and streams and then produced the floods we experienced. But now that has passed and the rivers are in great shape to be fished.
There are a number of rivers and creeks on the North Shore that benefit from the early alewife runs. The stripers that winter over and the new ones that migrate up from the Chesapeake and other winter holding areas slowly move from their low metabolism rates to almost a feeding frenzy as the water warms and the flows increase.
