I bought a fishing boat 16 foot that has metal bench seats in it and want to change to fold up seats with taking out any of the bench seats
1/2" to 3/4" thickness should be suitable. Seal it with a nautical-quality varnish / sealer too.
Keep an eye on the wood over time though... being exposed to the water will break it down over time.

I have an old Edson 16 ft. fiberglass boat which has been converted to a fishing boat with 2 captain's chairs. I want to add a bench seat to the boat to be able to take the kids out fishing too but am not sure how to attach the wood framed bench (which I am planning on making) to the fiberglass floor of the boat. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, etc. I would assume that I could attach a wood framed bench to the floor using fiberglass/resin but I don't know how to do that. Is there an easier way?
Quite easily,,, first, attach pieces of wood to the hull of the boat with fiberglass matt,cloth and resin. then, use stainless steel screws or lags to attach the bench to the wood. I recomend the stainless fasteners because they are just about rust proof.
My boat has 3 bench seats plus a smaller one in the bow and i am having a really hard time trying to get ply wood cut just right to fit perfectly in the space in the bow. the problem is the slant of the sides as it comes to the point in the bow with it being a v-hull. any recomendations would be nice and i can't use the old floor for a pattern since there is no old floor. any GOOD suggestions would be very helpful thanks.
Try this! Make a cardboard pattern of the bow section, and then measure the height of the wood that you're going to use, then measure the distance of the widest part of the peice, at that height, adding a slight bevel to compensate for any angle that may occur at that height on the sides. ( example ; the straight cut at the rear is 12 inches, but you're using 3/4" plywood, and that same measurement at that height on the sides is 13". You now know that you have to set your saw blade to make a 1/2" angle on the sides.)
You can set your saw blade at that angle, and when you cut the peice out, it shoud fit very closely. If not, use a rasp to clean up the edges until it pops in perfectly. Remember that since it's in the botom of a boat, it may get wet at times, and leave about a 1/16" - 1/8th inch all around for expansion and contraction.
My dad is looking to get a custom seat made for his boat. The back would be like an old fasioned train seat to how the back can move so the bench seat has a stable back but can be leaned back and forth to change the seat between looking forward and back. And he needs tackle storage under the seat. Does anyone know any companies that do this kind of work or places that sell seats like this
Try west marine or boat us you may not even have to have one made. We call them "flip flop" seats, and you can get them with a cooler built in also.
What kind of seats are in the front of a older model ski boat? They look like bench seats, but I've been unable to find someone who sells them, for what I understand pontoon boats are the only ones with bench seats. But I am restoring an older model ski boat and re-doing the seats and interior. I've bought the back to back seats but I'm unable to locate the seats in the front.
They are generally bucket seats in the older "low profile" boats, built into a wooden box frame that is secured to the hull. The seat cushions are removable for storage in the base.
i got open boat with two bench seats looking to make own floor. Have the materials for floor need to know how do you sercure/attach floor to boat. Is marine ply strong enoungh or does it need reinforment in the middle underneath of it?
You fail to say if you have a fiberglass boat or an aluminum boat.
Assuming you have an aluminum boat, it should have ribs in the floor placed about every two feet, Buy yourself some 3/4 inch green treated plywood and make a card board templete of the bottom of the boat. Place the template on top of the plywood and cut out the shape of your boat bottom, Mark your plywood every where there is a rib, then drill 1/8 inch holes in the plywood on the lines where your ribs will sit, after you drill the holes go back with a 3/8 inch drill bit and counter sink the hole about 1/4 inch deep. You will need some 3/16 inch x 1 1/8 inch self drilling panhead screws. Place the plywood in the bottom of the boat making sure your holes are directely over top of the ribs. Drive the screws into the holes you have drilled and into the ribs of the boat. After all the screws are in place you can glue your indoor out door carpet to the floor.
