How did jon boats get their name?
jonphoto225

They originated in Scandinavia where "Jon" (pronounced Yawn) is a common name. Fisherman used them to haul gear and fisherman to their larger fishing vessels. Every fisherman there found them to be very useful so they took on the most common name "Jon." They were cheap to construct and every "Jon" could afford one of his own.

I use one for most of my fishing. A 14' aluminum Jon.

How do I get money for a jon boat?
jonphoto225

The summer is coming up and i really want a cheap used jon boat. I need a little bit more money and i dont have a place to store one at the time. What should i do?

Build one!
I built one from plywood I had "laying around" I had to buy some nails, paint and such, but it conly cost $30.00. I started my 14 year old son building them now, his (our) cost is around $125.00 per boat, and we (he) have sold two for $650.00!

Good summer job, and teaches a skill. We use table saw, power saws and such, but I have seen a similar boat built by a guy at a campsite with hand tools only. It takes about a week per boat.

Where is the cheapest place to get a small jon boat trailer?
Taking it all with you.

I live in Wisconsin and I need a trailer for my 12' jon boat. Is there somewhere that sells cheap trailers near Oshkosh, WI or maybe a website for a kit that I can put together?
I only want to spend around $300.00.

Check out the URL shown below for a boat and trailer for $100.
Throw boat away and keep trailer. It is in Appleton.

Regards,
Dan

How do you stabilize a 12ft Jon Boat?
Badtodabone

I have a 12ft aluminum Jon Boat I need to stabilize to Duck Hunt out of. Can you think of any stabilization designs?

This is ultra redneck but it works great.

Get some plastic 10 to 55 gal barrels then run a aluminum bar over them that is attached to the barrels by hitch pins that are attached to the barrels by being (screwed)riveted to the top of the barrel and sealed with silicone.

Here is how it works. You your buddy and the two barrels head out to the spot. You attach the barrels to the bar via the pins. Then you twist the setup so that the bar is either sitting in the row pivots or just on top of the boat. Then using two clamps you clamp the bar to the boat.

Makes a huge difference and gives you a spot to take a extra step if need be.
If you are careful about it you can place stuff inside the barrels or use one barrel that is cut into two. This lets you keep all your stuff inside the barrel until you get out there then you split the barrel for stabilizers.

Goodluck

ME maritime buff catalogs vast US marine history The Associated Press

WINTERPORT, Maine — Thousands of ships over hundreds of years have navigated the rolling waters of Maine's Penobscot River across the street from Jon Johansen's home.

Inspired by that history, Johansen set about documenting every ship ever built along the shores of the state's largest river. What started as a modest endeavor has turned into a gargantuan undertaking: Johansen is attempting to create a database of virtually every vessel built in the United States.

So far, the maritime history buff says he has catalogued more than 50,000 vessels — from 20-foot lobster boats to modern-day warships.

But that's only the start. In time, he plans to create a Web site with his gobs of information and call it the International Maritime Library. It's his way, he says, of helping preserve a part of the nation's rich maritime past.

"We aren't a maritime nation any more. We still move a lot via the oceans, but we aren't like we used to be," Johansen said. "Everything was done on the water. If you wanted to go from Bangor to Boston, you didn't hop in your car and drive Interstate 95. You went on steamer. But unfortunately, that ended."
