What is a cheap baitcasting rod and reel combo?

I am just looking into baitcasting reels and this will be my first one can you give me one under $60. Tell me about them too just everything i will need to know about them.

I would go to a place like a Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's if available in your area. My wife and I purchased baitcasting reels last year. We did what was said, but still ended up making birds nests with the line. I would consult an expert - good luck!

What type of baitcasting rod/reel combo will allow me to fish for bottom fish, bait fish and stripers?

I just bought a shakespeare 6'6" baitcasting reel and lined it with 20#. It doesn't look to strong so my question is i know i'll be able to use it for bait fish and bottom fish, but can i use if for stripers too or is it too small?

the length of the rod is good. depending on the action of it. most rods are med action. a good rod for striper's would be 7' med-heavy or heavy action. you want the rod to have some back bone to it. so you are able to fight the fish. if your rod is a med action loosen the drag and follow the fish if its a really big one. 15 plus pounds. most of the rods i use for stripers are 6'6" med-heavy action with an ambassador 5500 c3 . I do have one 7'6" with a 6500 C4 with 30# . thats used for deep water with live baits or big top water plugs. just set your drag right if its a big fish so it wont snap your line on the hard runs it will make. to adjust the drag loosen the star to the left until u are able to pull line out using some force. if it spools off to easy tighten it till u have it set to your likings.

What would be a good baitcasting rod and reel combo for fishing jigs thats around 200$?

i have a rick clunn combo and want to upgrade. Price Range:200-300$.

It really depends on what you're after and what you will need the setup for, Cabelas is a good store to look at a bunch of different models , here's a bunch of them to look into.............

Need a general purpose bass baitcasting rod, Looking at 6'6" medium to medium heavy?

Gonna be using it for everything, cranks, spinnerbaits, topwater, worms, and jigs. Im looking at the Cabela's Magtouch. Has anyone used it and what would you recommend?

I own the Spinning version of the Mag-touch and it is phenomenal. They are one of the most sensitive, well-balanced rods I've ever owned.

Cabelas is one of the few company's that excels at duplicating (copying) expensive name-brand rods. They don't always get it right but in this case (in my opinion) they hit a home run!

The only minor issue with the Magtouch is how slippery the handle can be, (esp when wet). Other than that it is well worth the sale price.

The problem?

The Medium action will work great for a general purpose rod EXCEPT for Crankin', (because of it's fast action graphite design).

And the cool part? You have 60 days to make up your mind!

The other issue? It's a GREAT rod for the SALE price, (I got mine for $59). But at $99, if I were you I'd shop around and see what other name-brand rods are available......

Here are some examples-

The above St. Croix Mojo would def give a Magtouch a run for it's money!

Hope this helps? Good luck in your search.

What is the best Baitcasting Rod and Reel Combo under $70?

I was thinking of the Daiwa baitcasting combo thats priced at $60. It was given alot of good reviews on BassPro.com. If this really is a pretty good combo to buy, is there any place that sells it besides online at basspro.com? Any and all suggestions and recommendations on a baitcasting rod and reel in the price range please.

If your talking about the Daiwa Procaster, you are getting a good deal. It is a solid reel for the money. When I purchased my first baitcaster, I got a crappy combo, and regretted it later. If I was you, I would get the procaster. Daiwa is a good company, and will help you with any problems you may have with the reel. If this is your first baitcasting rig, keep with it, you will get the "educated thumb" after alot of practice. Even the pros get bird nests sometimes, they just don't show them on TV. You could also try Cabelas.com for a similar deal, or Extreme lures.com Have fun and tight lines.

Would i be able to put a baitcasting reel on my rod?

I have a Berkely Lighting rod and i am thinking about getting a baitcasting reel but am not sure if i can put one on my rod. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

School Nurse and John M are totally correct.(Thumbs up!)

You CAN do it, but you eliminate your casting distance by 40-50%.

And the "spine" of a spinning rod is designed to bend a certain way. If you continuously bend it in the other direction eventually it will break or one of your guides will pop off.

And like John M mentioned, the guides on a spinning outfit are distanced OFF the rod blank to help spinning reels get that extra distance in casting.

It just doesn't work well.

Would you try to put bicycle wheels on a skate board?

Walmart has dirt cheap bait-casting rods ,(Berkley Cherry wood/Shakespeare), that will:

a. HELP you learn how to cast a baitcaster correctly- (I can't imagine how HARD it would be to learn how to cast a BCer using a spinning rod!!!)

No to mention the fact, if you decide to use a spinning rod on your BCer you are telling every fisherman that see's you that you are an idiot.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....

Good luck!

(PS- School Nurse- You got it. It's called a trigger. I think my wife calls "something else" a trigger dilly.....(lol)....Thumbs to ya'll.)

City Park Big Bass Rodeo nets big results NOLA.com

City Park Big Bass Rodeo nets big results By Bob Marshall, The Times-Picayune March 28, 2010, 7:43AM

Two lunker bass over 5 pounds took top honors at the 63rd City Park Big Bass Rodeo on Saturday, proving the park's storied lagoons are on the mend from Hurricane Katrina.

David White took top honors in the spinner/baitcasting category with a 5.52 wall-hanger that typically would be the biggest news at the nation's oldest freshwater fishing contest, which drew 644 anglers of all ages.

But White had to share the spotlight with Ramon Gaitan, who landed a 5.41-pound big mouth on a fly rod, the biggest fly-rod catch the event's two-year break after since Katrina, and one of the largest ever on the long rod in the rodeo's history.

Gaitan said he was casting a yellow popper at the southern end of Bayou St. John when the big fish hit.

"It took a while because he fought," said Gaitan, who added it was the largest bass he has caught fly fishing. "He worked it real good."
