Barnes, president of the Clear Fork Valley Bassmasters, began seeking largemouths at around age 4, and has been after them ever since. He's won tournament after tournament, and took championships three consecutive years. The veteran angler has fished from the Ohio River to Lake Erie, and inland lakes from Indian Lake to Pymatuning and Salt Fork.

What's his advice for cold water fishing?

"You need to go shallow now," he said, "and pay attention to the angle of the sun. "If there's good sunlight, the shallows on a lake's sunny side will warm a crucial degree or two, enough to bring fish in seeking both warmth and food. That's the first place you fish them."

Barnes looks for water of three feet or less, and he particularly favors gravel and rock bottom over mud. If the water is a little murky, he's not above tapping the bottom with a rod tip to feel for that rock and pea gravel combination that bass love in early spring. Wood? He's not particularly enamored with wood right now, and when he finds a fallen tree he'll do most of his casting at the deep end first, then maybe a few casts closer to shore. Fish tend to hang under the deepest part, and move shallower to feed, then back again. In short, give fallen timber a few tosses, then move on.
