I always wondered that this combo would be the best for me. If you have it has it done good for you?
I fish for carp and catfish

I have one but i not selling it i got it for FREE in a bass angleing compition it has served me well and I have had it for 14 years good luck trying to find one bud.

trying to break a fishing rod

i want to buy an ugly stik, but i dont know what a blank-through-handle means

That's the way the rod is made. It just means the blank (what most people know as the rod) doesn't just "stop" at the handle, it actually goes "through" the handle (the length of the entire rod). A better way to think of it is the handle or grips (fore and rear) are wrapped around the blank. Having the blank through the handle is a way of adding strength and sensitivity. The rods have more "backbone". It also increases feel. Those hits or vibrations that you feel, you feel through the handle. Having the blank built through the handle is the reason for this. It's a good thing! On some rods the blank is even exposed through the reel seat. Having any extra advantage is a bonus!

i saw this fishing show the other day where they were wading in rivers and they were using a collapsible ugly stiks that were 12 and 13 feet long. he said they were using crappie rods but they were using 20 lb. test. i've looked on shakespeare's website but i can't find any crappie or freshwater rods that are that long. and it didn't look like it had any eyes on the rod. it appeared to just be like a modern day cane pole and the line was running up the middle of the rod and only had 4 to 5 feet of line coming off the tip. and they weren't using a reel; they were just tossing it like a cane pole. can anybody help me find that rod?

That's what most people call a "bream buster". It's a telescoping fiberglass cane pole. There are different manufacturers, and they go by different names depending on where you live. You can find some with a small reel built in to the handle.

What rod should I pair with this kind of fishing pole? I know absolutley nothing about fishing poles and need help!!! Are these good poles? Please give me some info!! Thanks

If ya' just be startin' out, then I'd go with a reel (spinning) at a reasonable price. Daiwa, Shimano, Penn, Quantum, Abu Garcia are just a few good brand names. Go through the site that AIR FLO gave ya' ~ find the right price along with what you'll need. Link below, is for a Shimano spinning reel, item # 38-330-376-00 should match up with your Uglystik pretty well. When ya' make the decision on the reel ~ "Fish On" ;)...

Ok well you should disregard what the first answer says, braid cannot cut through ceramic guides no matter what. The good quality braid line, like power pro, cant even damage steel guides, which is softer than ceramic.

Ok now to answer your Q. The first rod i used on the salt was a 6 foot medium ugly, it wasnt the lite though and it was one piece. I have the 5' UL ugly stik lite that i use for trout, but i have caught a 3 pound bonito off of a pier with it as well. These things will be able to handle pretty much any of the inshore species, bass, halibut, croaker, perch, you name it, it can bring it in. Since im a bigger guy, i would get the 7' rod, but you should get at least the 6'. These things dont even need to be washed that often, just make sure you do when you start seeing salt on the guides. great all around rod, very strong, it says 6-15 pound rating, but i think it can handle at least 20 pounds. and dont be afraid to toss a 2-3 OZ. rig at full strength with the uglys either. I say buy it. Best rod for the money.

I'm looking into getting a shakespeare ugly stik spinning rod/reel combo that comes in a 5', 6', or 6'6" size.

From my expirence longer is better in every thing except storage. They are more accurate better for setting the hook and fighting the fish and cast longer. Think of it like this, if you have a spoon and you are trying to flip of a crum or something off it accross the room you can flip it alot further with a much longer spoon compared to a shoter spoon, the same consept applies to a rod.
