Cabela's Fish Eagle II Spinning Rod w/ Shimano Sahara Reel? Rod and Reel HELP?
Jigging 155

I'm planning on purchasing this Rod and Reel Combo but need help on the Rod length and Power.and Reel Line Capacity and LB Test. I will be mostly fishing for Bass, Crappie, Panfish and Trout. I want the Rod and Reel to be able to handle the biggest fish possible out of the species I'm fishing for yet be light and responsive. Rod choices are:
6' med light (4-10lb test)
6' med (6-12lb test)
6'6" med light (4-10lb test)
6'6" med (6-12lb test)

Reel Choices:
120yd/4lb test (4.7:1 ratio)
130yd/6lb test (6.2:1 ratio)
140yd/8lb test (6.2:1 ratio)
200yd/10lb test (6.0:1)

Thanks

6"6 medium light for the rod. Now for the reel...I have a little bit of a dilemma. I personally would go with the 6lb/130yds because I'm a lightline type of guy. I think most people would go with the 8lb/140yds. That will take anything you can toss at it.

A 4-10lb test rod will have enough backbone to pull fish (bass) and yet retain enough sensitivity to fish for panfish/crappie/trout. These aren't "light" rods. They aren't made with ultralight angling in mind....that would be more like 1-6lb....that's ultralight.

It's a difficult decision on the rod because fishing for bass is totally different from crappie/panfish. It's a completely different aproach and "feel." I would recommend looking into a seperate setup for each....or at least a different rod if you can.

<<<<<HOWEVER>>>>>
If I were you, I would just fork out the extra $10 and get the Shimano SYMETRE/Fish Eagle II combo. That's a MUCH better reel. I have two, and I put them up close to the Stradics I have. The Sahara isn't going to be as smooth or as durable as the Symetre. The Symetre was a mistake for Shimano - they put better technology in a "cheaper" reel. That's why they had to UP the price two years ago. They realized that too much of the same technology was in the Symetre that was also in the Stradic FI. I would definitely go with the other combo....you'll be glad you did - it's a world of difference.

what is the best spinning rod and reel available
Jigging 153

I am looking for a great spinning rod and reel. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of a Shimano 2500 Symetre reel and a loomis 7' medium heavy pole.

YIKES!!! This is so vague!

in general, not species specific, for me, it's .....

RODS
GLoomis GL3/IMX (not the GLX - too many times have I seen those shatter from being so thin walled...it's not worth the $50 I have to pay to get it back from Loomis warranty service), Rainshadow RX7/RX8, Rogue rods, St Croix SCIII / IV, Lamiglas Certified Pro, and honorable mention to Fenwick HMG/HMX/AV

REELS
Shimano Saros, Symetre, Stella, TwinPower, Stradic FH-not the new one...
Daiwa Z-CU, Steez, Capricorn A (not that orange XTC crap from Dick's Sporting Goods), Advantage, Spinmatic
Quantum EPTi - still think it's too heavy even though I like it....

Is my rod and reel line tough enough to fish for Striped Bass??
Jigging 154

I just bought a new reel, rod, and basic equiptment to go bass fishing, more specifically striped bass. The rod I bought is a Shimano FX Spinning Rod - Length: 7'0", Line Weight: 6-14lbs, Lure Weight: 1/4-5/8oz, Power: Medium, and
Action: Fast -- The reel line I picked up is "Ultra Line:Mustad" and holds 14lb (6.4kg) and spans 330 yards (300m) -- Is this rod and reel line powerful enough to withstand striped bass out in Nova Scotia, Canada??

Your combination is fine however you definatly need to make sure your drag is set well just in case you catch a fish over 15 pounds. You will still be able to reel them in, it just might take awhile. Good luck!

i ust bought a shimano spirex1000re and im wondering what kind of rod to buy for topwater bass fishing?
Jigging 152

i know im not using a baitcaster, but im more comfortable with a spinning rod

a 7ft ugly stik

do you have to use a carp rod for carp fishing?

hi i have started to go carp fishing and was wondering if i need a new rod specially for carp rods i mean does it matter if i use some other coarse rods ???
would these be okay to use?
shakesphere ugly stick 10ft
shimano cantana bx spinning rod 9 ft
daiwa feeder rod 12ft

many thanks also what about reels can i just use any reel
sorry yer im going gor the big boys i.e 20Ibs plus

If its likely your catching 20lb+ fish you really need at least 2.5 test curve really. I use two 3lb test curve rods with my alarms and use a 2.5 tc to use with the float. I use 12 or 15lb main line on shimano 8000 reels with size 6-10 hooks and scale down to 6 or 8lb line with size 12-16 hooks. Its all about overall balance but with the bigger fish you'll need to be prepared to step up your tackle. good luck.

daughter and step son wants to take up fishing, rod advice?

hi, i been fishing for about 12 years but i kind of have my own way of going about everything involved in fishing ......anyway my daughter who is 9 would like to start to fish with aswell as my wifes other son who is 15 ...... he wants the Shimano Catana Bx Spinning Rod for his birthday next month and i was wondering weather this would be suitable for ledger and float fishing ?????????? and what rod should i get my daughter im guessin a fairly light rod but have been told to not touch the telescopic any recomendations!

hey man, if your stepson is comfortable with a spinning rod i would say yes that the shimano is a great great reel. if not i think that i would start with something a little less expensive like an abu garcia. which is also a great reel but you can get one of their cardinal series at the waley world for about 30-5 dollars. and for your 9 yr old lil one. i would suggest to get her a zebco 33 classic. to start with this is a long lasting easily used and very durable the 33 classic can come in a combo that usually runs about 30 dollars. well for the shimano if he just found the reel and not a rod i would suggest the medium action 6'6'' shakespear ugly stick. it is an inexpensive rod that is very durable and will have many many years of use. if you add all this together it doesn't add up to a small fortune it should all be very reasonable. man i hope this helps you out a bit. good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

Reels have come a long ways Jamestown Sun

When I began fishing in the 1950s the free-spool bait-casting reel had not yet been invented. Like most youngsters, I started fishing with a push-button Zebco 66, then graduated to a Zebco 33. My first bait reel was a primitive Plueger with no drag and no free spool. Naturally, it was a challenge to cast without getting frequent backlashes. With the lack of drag and free-spool features, I remember a number of times getting my knuckles whacked at Jamestown Reservoir when feisty northern pike would slam a lure, then make a run, the reel handle spinning wildly as the pike took line.

It was somewhere around 1960 when we were able to buy a handle that would fit the Plueger, and into the handle base were a number of tiny screws that you could loosen a bit and have a drag of sorts!

A few years later I bought a Swedish-made Ambassadeur 5000 that I still own and use every year. The Ambassadeur was a premier reel at the time, employs the free-spool feature and a star drag. I own three Ambassadeurs for various types of freshwater fishing and also a 7000 model for salmon fishing.
