Usually an ultra light rod and reel is used for panfish. The light line gives the small lures better action than heavier line, and the rod makes detecting light bites easier. I have spools of 2 and 4lb. test for my rig. It's a lot of fun catching fish on an ultra light, because even smaller fish will put up a good fight. You can catch big fish on an ultra light, you just have to be careful while playing them. If you're fishing tough conditions, going to an ultra light can help you catch more game fish, too. Pressured fish, extremely clear water, and calm water are a few of the conditions I'll use my ultra light for walleye or bass. A 1/16th oz. jig tipped with a small leech or minnow is my favorite ultra light lure for walleye. I've taken walleye up to 28", pike to 38", and bass to 25" on my ultra light. If you're going to target game fish, make sure your hooks are sharp and your drag is properly set. When I have a bigger fish on, I like to "back reel" when the fish makes a run.

If you're fishing mainly for pan fish, ultra light is definitely the way to go. If you're going to be fishing for walleye or some other larger game fish, you might want to get the light combo. If you can get an extra spool for the light combo, put 2lb. test on it, and just change to the light line when you're after pan fish.

Hey guys I wanted to get your opinions on some rods and reels. I do alot of ultralight fishing and even sometimes use my ultralight to bass fish. I have a pretty good rig with a quantum ultra light reel and a berkley graphite series rod i paid probably 45 total for. My birthday is coming up an my girlfriend is going to spend around 70 to get me a new setup. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on rods and reels-spinning of course...I will be getting it all on sale at bass pro due to father's day sale so don't be too shy with the price because i may just get an absolute steal on it. I guess just let me know what you think. Thanks!

I was sponsored by quantum and have shimano spinning reels. I have had two high speed lightweight ones I use to make bait with and they are the now twenty years old. I clean them and take general all right care of them but I could not be more pleased with any two reels ever. (I got them when Big 5 marked them down to get them out of stock and paid 19.99 for each) I like and use the fiberglass and graphite combination rods on both reels and bought them from B P S and only paid for them for 19.99 as well.

What setup would work with it?
2-8 lb test, 1/8-1/2 lure

That rod would probably work great for small to med crank baits.
Not knowing that rod and only going by the ultra light rating, crank baits is all I would suggest without knowing its line or weight rating.
Post the line rating, and what weight that rod will handle and we will be able to help you more.

I have a 7' MedLight I use for crank baits and love it.

With a line rating of 2-8# you could go up to 10# line, or stick with 8#
Small to Med crankbaits....2-8 ft depending on the baits profile. A small one that would run as deep as 12 ft would be (like the fat free shads) ok. Just make sure and have your drag set correctly. Good luck and have fun.
