What are the regs. of bringing a hunting/fishing knife on a plane?

I'm going on a trip to N.J. to fish the coast. I have a lucky knife that I take EVERYWHERE I go. My best friend left it to me in his will after dieing in a boating accident. I would feel terrible if I had to leave it behind. A relative of mine in school for a commercial Pilot's License told me that I can bring it as long as I put it in my Luggage that goes beneath the plane(As apposed to carry on). What are the regulations on bringing it along with me on a commercial aircraft. Anyone know any websites that could help?
Since I am getting mixed results, can someone give me a website to go to. I have tried the Airlines site, the book of regs for flying(it indirectly mentioned that there is a size limit), the airports website, and a few others. But no luck.

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

That is the link to the TSA website they set the regulations on what you can and can not take on the aircraft with you in both your checked and carry on luggage. You will see that you are allowed to pack a knife in your checked luggage.

Hope this helps and have a great flight!

do gold clown knifes and black ghost knife fish get along?

My friend said that he would give me a young gold clown knife for free, which i am very interested in...only one thing makes me curious, would a black ghost knife about the size of your palm get along with a gold clown knife also the size of a palm?

Regardless of the electric field, these fish shouldn't be kept together. The ghost knife is a passive fish to most other species (they will be aggressive with another adult ghost knife) but clown knives are aggressive predators. And that doesn't even get into the size of tank you'd need to keep one as an adult!

The only knifefish you should ever keep together are glass knives (and yes, these do emit the electrical field, but they are a naturally shoaling species).

Is it legal for a 15 year old to have a fishing/hunting knife?

I can legally buy it in NC, or get it illegally. But would it be illegal for me to have it concealed in public? If it is secured, and I don't use it? Give me details. I live in VA btw

VA does not specify an age for possession of fixed blade knives, only selling them. You must be 18 to buy one, but anyone can possess one

A hunting knife and indeed most fixed blade knives fall within VA's legal prohibition on "dirks" and "bowie knives." It is illegal to carry such knives concealed, but there are exceptions. It is legal to carry
1) to and from a place of purchase or repair,
2) to and from a place of exhibition, provided it is wrapped up or locked in a box securely
3) on your own property or place of business

Otherwise, it must be carried openly.

I have a bunch of antiques, fishing reels, very old records (Albums), knifes and such. trying to find value $?

where would you go to find out about how much your stuff is worth. I know that someones junk is anothers treasure,, but if I auction it off, how do you know where to start if you do not have a clue what it's worth?

Try searching on eBay for the items you're trying to sell, to see how much other people are selling them for. There is probably some Antique Dealers which you can probably contact and ask about the value in your local phone directory. (Easier, and more local than Google) Then, you might then know whether to keep it or not!

What is the purpose of a knife when fishing, besides fillet?

Purpose of a knife...Obviously ( since it's asked here) it would be for cleaning a fish or cutting bait. Other uses would be shucking shell fish, fending off killer raccoons, stabbing your self in the heart for every fish you screwed up catching, using it as a flashy signal if you get stuck on an island alone, As a weapon against other malicious crustaceans that threaten you, a reminder to all those assassinations of under sized junk fish, and last but not least, the blade of steel just rusting away in your tackle box.~good luck catchin'.

Anatomy of a Fly Fishing Vest

Yesterday we got out our fishing gear to prepare for fishing season which opens on June 6th. This is a ritual that happens every year in the Squash House. We make sure we have enough flies - both dry and wet - sunscreen - and all of the other essentials that we carry around in our vests. Below is my vest. I love it - there are tons of pockets that you can see and can't see, it's made mostly of a lightweight mesh that breathes - this is extremely important when you're on the river all day with no breeze and temps in the 80's. Click on the picture for more detail.

Below is my fanny pack, which I also love, made by Fishpond. It took going through many, many packs before I found one that fit this well on my frame. It has several compartments as well as two side compartments for water bottles - another essential for being on the river all day.

There are a few things in the above phote (click to make larger) that you may question! What's a Spork, you say? Well, it's a very clever combination of a fork, spoon and knife! Depending on what you pack for your lunch, it can come in very handy! My lunch is usually a yogurt, some fresh cut fruit and an energy bar. The felt sole boots are very important for wading streams - it can be very slippery under the surface and the felt is amazing at keeping you stable (most of the time). And you're probably also asking what is a neck buddy? It's a neck scarf filled with little expandable beads. You soak it for about 30 minutes during which time it puffs up, then you wrap it around your neck for the ultimate cooling experience - they can last all day on the river!
