Fly Fishing Combo

Answers

I am new to the sport of fly fishing and was thinking of buying a caddis creek cc68 rod reel combo?

Can anyone give me a personal review of this outfit?

I hate to say this, but it isn't a good rod to start with, you likely will find casting hard due to its quality, it took, some finding, as I'm not familiar with that combo, is this the combo you were looking into buying

I do however have a suggestion of something, not too expensive, and that should serve you well

A little warning before using double fly combo's.

first time fly fishing rod and reel kit combo need help!?

i just bought my first fly fishing kit thing it comes with a 2 part rod a reel some flys this rope like stuff , like clear line, and other plastic like line i need a website or something to help me spool it i no how to spin and bait cast and spool them and Ive been for about 10 years i just decided to try this but im very lost i just wanna no how to set everything up.

The braided "rope like stuff" is backing. This goes on the reel first. Then the fly line "plastic like line" attaches to that. Last the leader "clear line" goes on. The leader should be tapered and the fat end connects to the fly line. You can use nail knots to attach the backing, fly line and leader to each other. You'll also need some tippet material to go from the leader to the fly. Just use a blood knot or surgeon's knot to attach it. As you change flies, add more tippet so you don't lose the length of your leader. If there's a fly shop in your area, they'll be glad to help you get it set up since they know this will bring you back for flies, line, etc. They will also be able to tell you what patterns work for the species you are fishing for. Good luck with the new fly rod.

Fly fishing rod help!!!???!??!?!?!?

I saw this fly fishing combo on ebay, and want to know if its a good rod to start with. I'm fishing trout and salmon on the credit river in missisauga. Anyone know some good spots?

I'm sorry to burst your bubble but that combo is terrible, (esp as a beginner outfit.)

Go to Cabelas and check out their lower end rod/reel combo's.

Your "best bet" for a decent combo:

Pflueger 1494 Reel matched to a Cabelas PT + 906-2.

Cabelas makes very good entry level rods. As do Redington, St. Croix, Sage.

You will have a miserable time casting an E-glass rod, (esp if you have NO idea what your doing!)

In most things you purchase, the old saying,"You get what you pay for!" is apparent.

When buying flyfishing equipment this saying is VERY important!

If you spend less than $60-70 on your first fly-outfit I can almost guarantee you will end up HATING the sport.

What would be your expectations of a BRAND NEW car you purchased for $500?

If you wanted to become an artist would you purchase construction paper and crayons to work with?

fly fishing???

okay im getting a fley reel this monday and ive been using a fly on my spinning reel and had alot of success...but now im switching my reels wut lb. line and backing should i get....im kind of a beginner 2 usiong a fly reel and rod combo..
ive been using spinning reel on spinning rod only that i tie on a flie and use the combo as fly fishing tackle...o bought a cabelas presige reel, sunset amnesia shooting line (15 LB. test), Cabelas Prestige white fly line ( size # 20)...is that trouble in the making???

You've been using a spinning reel on your fly rod? clearly you have been using the rod as an ordinary fresh water rod. OK i will try to help you out although i don't know how you have been fishing. Have you actually got a fly rod? if you haven't then you need about a 6-7wt as mentioned,a medium to fast action taper is what you require, there are a wide range of fly rods available, a simple combo can work out cheaper than buying a fly rod and reel separately

These are excellent kits to start with and should last a long time. If you do decide to buy a fly line to put on your fly reel, then match it with the rods rating, use a weight forward to start with, you only need a floating line to beggin with, do not buy a DT line yet, as it will be too hard for you to cast as youre just starting out, you will also need soem backing, 20lb test dacron will work fine. I suggest you buy the best quality line you can, such as rio, sage, airflo, cortland.

Is this a good fly rod/ reel combo for a beginner?

I dont have very much money but I still really want to learn how to fly fish. I am thinking about buying the Martin Fly Fishing Rod & Reel Combo - 8' Rod for $38. Is this a good rod and reel combo for a beginner or is harder to use because its so cheap.
What other inexpensive combos would you recommend for a beginner fly fisherman?

Markin combo

Any rod and reel you buy cheap just to see if you like the sport is worth it. Lets say you went and spent 300 dollars on a rod and reel and didnt like it now your stuck with an expensive rod and reel.. In the begin keep it simple keep it fun till you find out if you like the sport and if you do then go BIG.

Best route to get into fly fishing???

I am interested in getting into fly fishing because I have a vacation home close to the white river and I was wondering what do I need to do? What is a good entry level rod and reel combo? I have seen one by White River Fly Shop at bass pro for under a $100.... Also how could I learn? Books, DVDs, or Lessons??

Well let me say its great you want to start fly fishing, there are lots of OK fly rods and reels combos for the price you listed, its a great method of catching trout and your lucky to have the white river to fish, lets see how i can help you, firstly combos that i recommend, this is a little over budget but well worth it, it should see you good and happy fishing for a long time.
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_96767_175001003_175000000_175001000_175-1-3

If you find out the area of the river your fishing you can figure the line weight, for small wild browns and small dries a 3wt or 4wt would be ideal. If your hitting the bigger rainbow trout then anything up to a 6-7 wt would be ideal, if you decide to look for a rod your self you need a medium to fast action, not a tip action as you're just starting out. The rods mentioned by your self aren't ad rods but if i were you and you can afford to go with the TFO rod. If you really don't mind spending allot and want the best combo for a beginner then the sage launch is the way to go, i gave my son one of these to start with and it has a good tip action that will cope with an in-experienced caster.

Its easy to start fly fishing, buy your self a combo you cana fford and it will take off from there, this site is VERY helpful, read through the WHOLE of it and you will be started in no-time

You may also want to look at flies to use, you can get lots of info here, and if you want join the blog where you can ask angler in your local community how the fishing is going and what to catch them on at the white river.

You will need a fly line, a floating line will cover you for 99% of the time and you may want to move onto intermediates, sink tips, slime lines, DT, fast sinking etc later on. When you buy a fly line make sure its WF=weight forward, it will be easy for you to cast. One last thing i will say even if you only spend a little amount on a fly rod, buy a quality fly line, they may be expensive but you can tell the difference, after all its the fly line that takes out your fly and leader. Quality lines are RIO, Airflo, Sage, Orvis.

This was taken from a question i answered on the fly and tippet and leader, its important and you can learn allot from this, reading is the key to learning about fly fishing!
You might also like to look at this, taken from another fly fishing question very similar to yours.

From the end of the fly line down to the fly, follow these steps and you should catch. For tippet material you have a large choice because first there are leaders then there are tippets for general fishing tippet i use fluorocarbon as its invisible in all water and suitable for saltwater too, for makes i always go for airflo sight free g3 which i generally buy from cabelas, second are leaders these are tapered towards the tip and help yo achieve a better turnover (cast and presentation) these i don't often use but when i do i use Cortland fine trout leaders in clear, these are good for a beginner such as your self as the dont often need changeing and help you cast further than before with a neat presentation what i will say is dont use flourocarbon for dry flies as it will make them sink, you can use it so long as you put a floatant on your dry such as gherkes gink or loon, aquel i buy lots of my gear from cabelas and bass pro
firstly airflo tippet

Leaders and cabelas own brand is fine for this(helps your cast and presentation

gink floatant (better than loon)
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=&id=0011254310859a&navCount=7&podId=0011254&parentId=cat600029&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat600029&hasJS=true
Dry flies that should work in your area
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?id=0030430&navCount=10&parentId=cat20528&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20528&rid=
* when you use a tippet for freshwater i generally go for about 5lb but as a beginner you can use up to 10lb with airflo g3 and still catch.

I would try mainly nypmhs however if you arent confident in dry fly fishing or if the trout arent rising, some great flies to try for a beginner like yourself would be
The Pheasant atil nymph, anything from size 12-14
hares ear nymph same sizes, also a gold bead head version can work equally well, when fished closer to the bottom.
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?id=0018101&navCount=15&parentId=cat20530&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20530&rid=

These can also work well fished very close to the bottom on a floating line, try a co-polymer leader
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod-wrapped.jsp?id=0030347&navCount=19&parentId=cat20530&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat20431-cat20441-cat20530&parentType=index&indexId=cat20530&rid=
The san Juan worm is one to try, fish it singly with a almost static retrieve, twitching it every minute or so.

if all else fails you may want to try a woolly bugger like this
(it has built in flash to add a little more appeal)
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20431-cat20441-cat380001&rid=&indexId=cat380001&navAction=push&masterpathid=&navCount=23&parentType=index&parentId=cat380001&id=0023260
Hope this is of help.

Outdoors: Alternative methods to catch red salmon - Kodiak Daily Mirror

Last week I hinted that there are more ways to catch red salmon than sight fishing. You don’t have to join the crowds in the few locations where site fishing works. Red salmon can be caught in lots of other places, too.

Up until 25 years ago, you never heard of anyone catching reds on Kodiak with hook and line. Everyone was convinced that if you wanted to score you had to use a gillnet.

Yet catching reds on hooks is old hat in lots of other places! Kodiak’s favorite technique is the legal snag worked out on the Kenai Peninsula, but with a twist. While you can’t see the fish in Kenai rivers, the runs are strong enough that “blind” fishing works.

Kodiak’s twist is to fish for visible fish. Since most of our rivers host smaller runs of reds, it just make sense to concentrate only on the fish you can see.

And practitioners of the art can get really good at it. One friend bragged that he could catch any fish he could see, and after watching him at work, I’m a believer.
