i bought silver non- weighted beads from a craft store a few days ago and when i put them on my fly that i tied (not knowing that it was not weighted) i figured i would sink well, but when i got to the stream it didnt. is there anything i can add to the bead to make it sink?
Yea, there are a couple things you can do. You can put Xink (there are other brands, too) on your leader and even fly to help get them down (I do this on all nymphs and wet flies anyway). There is also some soft tungsten putty you can get at Cabela’s or Sportsman’s Warehouse that you can put on the leader to sink it. Not knowing what pattern you tied, those would be my best suggestions and both have worked for me.
Nearly any wet fly I tie also gets at least a couple turns of lead wire around the hook before I even start to work on dubbing or any other body additions. Good luck!

"You've got plenty of material to make Winnipesaukee smelts don't you?" Pete asked.
"Oh yeah... It's supposed to rain the next couple of days, why don't I make a half dozen or so for each of us," I replied.
"Tie them thick," Mike suggested. "You know how much more effective the fat ones are early in the season."
As we stood in Pete's garage talking, he reminded us about a couple early season trips we made near Rattlesnake Island. We'd been trolling for nearly three hours around Governor's Island with spoons and just couldn't trigger a strike. Pete suggested we pull up and make a run to Rattlesnake. When we got there he picked through my fly box and plucked out a three-inch long fat Winnipesaukee smelt that I'd made during
