Weekly fishing report Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Crappie fishing was good on many lakes during the recent warm weather. They were found primarily on the north ends of lakes. The strong south winds had pushed the warm water and food into these areas. Shallow, dark-bottomed bays and channels also held fish. When crappies are in these shallow, clear water areas during calm conditions, "stealth" presentations should be used. Your trolling motor should be used in these areas so you don't spook the fish. A clear casting bubble will also help not spook them. During cold fronts, the crappies may move out of the shallower water and suspend over the first drop-off outside these areas. A small fathead or lake shiner minnow baited on a small jig or hook and suspended under a float will work best. Casting a 1/32-ounce jig-and-plastic combo or tube jig also have produced crappies.
Bluegills also were active. Look for them in the same locations as the crappies. An ice fishing jig or small hook baited with a wax worm, red worm or spikes has worked best. Small plastic tails or a black ant fly tipped with a wax worm also produced.
