What type of sinker should i use when fishing off a pier?
take a poo, take a pic

I'm fishing in Galveston off a pier in the morning should I use a pyramid sinker (I have a 2 and 3 oz.) or one with the round bottom.(1 or 2 oz.) I'm going to have two leaders coming off it with live or frozen shrimp if this matters any.

Or if neither any suggestions would be appreciated.

New to saltwater fishing here.

I have fished off of several of Galveston's piers. I am assuming you will be on one of the piers or jetties near the shoreline near the Flagship?. Seawolf Park area has some nice areas to fish as well. Fishing off the pier near the surf, use enough weight to just keep your rigging down. To much weight and you will find yourself missing bites. If you get some live shrimp then use a popping cork and catch some specks in the early morning feeding near the top. My friends have been catching nice specks in Galveston Bay, San-Luis Pass and Christmas Bay areas, so I'm sure they are all in the surf as well. While fishing off the pier area or on the jetties there, remember when you want to reel in to check your bait or something, put your rod tip high in the air and reel in as fast as you can. Lot's of hang-ups around those areas and I have lost my share of tackle fishing them. Feel free to email me for info of the area. 40yr exp

How do you throw an effective sinker?
sapremia

I am a high school baseball pitcher, and I've been pitching for only three years now. I played last year and was wondering how to throw an effective sinker to induce lots of groundballs. I think that will be the only way I can truly be successful because I can't overpower anyone with a fastball, my curveball seems to be picked up easily and my only plus-plus pitch is a circle change-up. Location for me is obviously key, but adding a sinker to my repertoire is one of my top goals. Any tips? Good grips, arm action, arm slot or delivery style?

It's easier than you might think. (overhand delivery)
1)Hold the ball with the seams instead of across them
2)Apply a little pressure to the bottom of the ball with your thumb

This will reduce the 6-12 spin. Also, be aware that using your thumb will reduce velocity a little, but that's ok. If you use the same arm speed as your fastball, the difference in speed will be negligible and the drop will be just enough to get your double play ball.

Going further. Take a little off of it. You now have a terrific off-speed pitch that sinks alot more. You'll get some K's out of it, but you'll get a ton of weak ground balls to 3rd base

What is the difference between a slider and a sinker?
Boost Version Three Work In progress

If I understand correctly, a sinker is a fastball that dips to the knees, and a slider is a sinking curveball. I don't know if that is correct, so what exactly is the difference?

Sliders are quiet and stinky while stinkers are loud, noisey and stinky.

While fishing, you get bored and start to swing a sinker weight around in a circle below you on a 0.23 m piece
(Untitled)

While fishing, you get bored and start to swing a sinker weight around in a circle below you on a 0.23 m piece of fishing line. The weight makes a complete circle every 0.60 s. What is the angle that the fishing line makes with the vertical?

I had 88.8 degrees but that is not the right answer to this problem. Please help.

length of fishing line 0.23 m is hypoteneus of right angelled triangle in vertical plane with base equal to radius 'r' of circle

Suppose in the vector triangle of forces, fishing line length Lrepresents tension in the line

If height 'h' of triangle represents weight 'mg' of sinker and base 'r' of triangle represents centripetal force F=mv^/r=mr*4*(pi)^2 / T^2

where T is time period =0.60 s

mg/h=mr4(pi)^2/rT^2

h=gT^2/4(pi^2)=9.8*0.6*0.6 / 4*9.87= 0.089 m

suppose fishing line makes angle O with vertical ,then

cosO=h/ L( lenght of line)

cosO=0.089/0.23=0.3885

O=67.13 degree

Angle O with vertical is 67.13 degree

How do you make a split finger fastball more effective? How do you throw a sinker?

I know how to throw a splitter but it is not very effective. I used to throw a sinker but forgot how.

To make the split finger work well, you need to have good movement. Most good splitters will shoot down in the strike zone and make the batter swing over the pitch. The first link below has some great information on how to grip pitches. Be careful with teh split finger as it's a good way to mess up your elbow. The sinker is there too, under "two seamer." The second link has more information about the split finger.

How far should the sinker be from the hook?

I do freshwater fishing, mainly in lakes. I usually tie the sinker about 8 inches from the hook.
I use spinners mostly for bait, but I want to use small live fish also .

You didn't say what you were fishing for or what bait you are using.

I would never tie a weight on either, try a little egg sinker and slip the line thru it tie on a small swivel. To the swivel tie on a leader of light mono, length depends on what your using for bait and where your fishing, then your hook.

Spome applications have you tie the weight on the end of the line and then tie a loop about 16-24" above it and add your hook then,

The point is that you want to feel a bite and thefish should not feel the weight. You'll get more bites and more fish.

At times I do not use any weight just freeline a bait so it can swim.

Rangers' Scott Feldman trying to get ground ball outs Fort Worth Star Telegram

'

ARLINGTON -- In his past two starts, Texas Rangers right-hander Scott Feldman hasn't induced many groundouts with his sinker. He hasn't used his still-developing changeup with two strikes because, for the most part, he has been continually behind in the count. Quite simply, Feldman hasn't pitched like a staff ace. He has two straight losses, leaving before the end of the fourth inning in both games. Still, his mind-set hasn't changed going into this afternoon's game against the Chicago White Sox. Asked what his goal was going into his fifth start, Feldman simply said: "To win the game." "I want to give our team a chance to win and get deep in the game," he said. "I haven't pitched very well and haven't executed my pitches the last two games. So, hopefully, it's one of those things I've ironed out in my bullpen session and I can go out there and get back on track." The key for Feldman, who has a 5.40 ERA this season, will be to locate his sinker and get more ground balls. Against Detroit, only two of his 11 outs were groundouts. Against the Yankees, he only had three groundouts. "When Feldman is getting a lot of ground balls, you know he's right," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "When he's getting a lot of balls up in the air, he's not. So we just have got to get them back on the ground. If we get them back on the ground, he'll be successful." Feldman would also like to improve with runners on base. So far this season, opponents are hitting .286 with runners in scoring position and .317 with men on base. More worrisome, though, is opponents are hitting .417 off Feldman with two outs and runners in scoring position. That was illustrated in Feldman's last start, when he surrendered a four-run lead as the Tigers scored five runs with two outs in what proved to be the pivotal fourth inning. "I just haven't made my pitches," Feldman said. "It's hard to get the result you want when you can't throw the ball where you want. I just haven't executed, especially with runners on base. So, hopefully, I've worked that out." Feldman said that he feels no added pressure this season after signing a $13.925 million contract extension that will carry through 2012, with a club option for 2013. "You always want to go out there and win," Feldman said. "You want to pitch well for your teammates and the fans out there. That's always been the same."
