Fly fishing dry and wet fly hooks?
sunset in archipelago

I recently bought size 12 and size 16 tiemco dry fly hooks. Can I also use these hooks for nymphs (hares ear, copper john, prince nymphs etc) or do they not sink well enough?
well they sink as well as nymph hooks though.

Yes you can use them for tying nymphs, the major problem you will be facing here is hook strength as a lighter wire is used for dry flies. As for sinking you can counter that with a beadhead or if you don't want to use a bead Gehrkes makes a product called "Xink" that is used for wet flies.(Gehrkes makes "Gink" for dry flies)

Yes, they will sink as soon as the fly gets soaked. Still I reccommend either using a bead or using a regular nymph hook.

Hook: 3399 wet fly hook, size 8-12, Thread 6/0 black thread, Tail Golden Pheasant tippet, Body: Siliver Mylar Tinsel, Rib: siliver Wire, Hackle ...

With all the fly patterns available, what did you come with on your own that catches fish?

Mine is "Mr. Moose"
Size 12/14 standard Mustad wet fly hook + gold bead head
Body: black or brown mohair yarn
Tail: black or brown goose biots
Collar: peacock herl
Legs: 3 strands moose hair on each side
Thread: brown or black

Place bead on hook, wrap thread underbody, attach biots,
then mohair yarn, wrap body with yarn 3/4 up the hook shank, tie off. Wrap collar w/ peacock herl, tie off. Attach 3 strands
of moose hair on one side, tie in, trim, tie off, then do the other side. trim hair flush w/ herl, trim hair to 3/4 body legnth

Works well as a smaller stonefly nymph or for general prospecting.

Sadly it hasn't got a name yet and I'm still improving its design along with others(the great thing about fly tying) but its simply a lure best fished on an intermediate line with a slow figure of 8 retrieve, Ive found it fishes best on 8lb Rio fluorocarbon, firstly a size 8 mustad long shank hook, then a quick base whipping with black thread, all strengths works, then its simply a white marabou and yellow marabou mix to form a short tail, then its dubbed with Krystal flash either lime green or coral, finish by adding lead dumbbell eyes(orange color) and whip finishing, also tried it with a hackle but it didn't work so well, i like to add a few strands of silver holographic tinsel in the tail, good choice of mustad hooks, i never use anything other when it comes to fly tying, i might try a gold bead head instead of the dumbbells sometime. Finnish the head with a coat of epoxy, its accounted for 6 good sized trout lately so it must be doing something right.

whats your favorite spinning rig for pan fish and small bass??
Salmon Hook Dark Spruce Matuka

my favorite is a popping fly wet fly combo.

yesterday i went to the video store to get a move, and theirs a great bream lake next to it, so what the heck, i parked next to it got out my little mini system spinning reel, and got out a popping fly, and a wet fly, i tied the the popper to the main line and than i tied a peace of line to the hook of the popper, and on the other end the wet fly, so it looked like this:

(go to the bottom of page)
small large mouth

7' ultra light, with a matched reel, 4lb test...... now, here is a change up- i have not done this in a great while-- i tie a fly on the end, a small bobber (clear one that you can add water to it), and cast it as normal,,, or use a very small split shot and a popper.

Senior Ball Drama that will make the guy from The OC have a wet dream.?
Light Spruce Matuka

Ok, so this is quite possibly the largest cluster-f**k of senior ball drama and I'm not sure what to do. So, any "relationship experts" and any person who wants to make another BS TV series please feel free to comment . Good luck following this.
Ok, so Rochelle had been going out with Tim for about two years. She broke up with him. Tim joined the army and nobody knows what became of him. The same sort of thing happened to Josh who was going out with Sarah for about two years as well. When Sarah dumped Josh he kinda just fell apart and started going through girls like a complete man-whore. Rochelle and Josh, both very good friends of mine decide to start going out. Nick however, who is also a good friend of both, had liked Rochelle for some time is a bit jealous of Josh and thinks he's a bad guy for flying through all the chicks. Now it get even more fun. John, best friends with Josh, has had a HUGE thing for Kelsey. He asks her out and gets rejected. He picks up smoking and now smells like an ashtray quite a bit. Soon Senior Ball is coming and LAST YEAR, Josh had decided to take Kelsey to it as friends. Realize that Josh is going out with Rochelle. So now John asks Rochelle and she says yes. Bit backwards but it works sort of.
Just a Review with notes before I continue...
All of us = good friends
Rochelle+Tim=love (no more)
Josh+Sarah=love (no more)
Tim+Sarah=gone (OUT of picture)
John Likes Kelsey. Kelsey doesn't like John.
Nick likes Rochelle. Rochelle doesn't like Nick.
Josh+Rochelle=going out
Josh+Kelsey=Dates
John+Rochelle=Dates
Yea...
So, now I'll introduce the other characters. I had been going out with Beth for about 16 months. We broke up. I decided with only a short time to ask Amy to Ball. Now, about a month later, I find out Amy has a HUGE thing for me. I don't have the same feelings for Amy. I instead am very much into Michele now. Michele also likes me. I don't really want to go with Amy, and Michele doesn't have a date and wants to go with me. Here comes David. He's had a lot of odd relationship which we won't today discuss too much. He recently has hooked up with Megan. Thing is he also has a Huge thing for Michele but Michele isn't into him.Her best friend on the other hand, Rachel, had a huge thing for him. David isn't into Rachel and actually used her to get closer to Michele. Nick still doesn't have a date so he asks Krista. They both like each other a bit.
I'm sure there are much more ties than this but this web is much to complex to follow.
Oh, and by the way were all going together in the Limo to Senior Ball. God only knows whats gonna happen. Any suggestions for any party?

just want to see if anyone can anwer all these?

Fly fishing: New spin on an ancient form Pittsburgh Post Gazette

They fasten red ... wool round a hook, and fit onto the wool two feathers which grow under a cock's wattles, and which in colour are like wax," wrote the Roman Claudius Aelianus of Macedonian fly fishermen on the Astraeus River near the end of the second century.

"Their rod is six feet long, and their line is the same length. Then they throw their snare, and the fish, attracted and maddened by the colour, comes straight at it, thinking from the pretty sight to gain a dainty mouthful. When, however, it opens its jaws, it is caught by the hook, and enjoys a bitter repast, a captive."

Millennia later, fly anglers still trick trout into thinking they'll "gain a dainty mouthful." Some of the earliest fly fishing in Pennsylvania, in the 17th and 18th centuries, was done with wet flies. Despite periodic episodes of marginal popularity, age old wet-fly tactics are seldom used by modern anglers.

Fishing guide Dave Allbaugh, of Mundy's Corner near Johnstown, says they're missing out on, "a great way to catch fish."

Dry Fly Vs Wet Fly

For many centuries the big question to angles was, Dry flys vs Wet Flys.Frst thing you need to know is the difference in a wet fly and dry fly. First of all a dry fly floats along the top of the watter and you can see your fly all the time you are fishing. But a wet fly on the other hand sinks about 4 inches under the watter and you cant see the fly while you are fishing.

The fly you will be fishing will depend on the type of watter you are fishing, if you plan to fish fast rough watter you sould use a wet fly. The reason for this is so your fly will get down to the depth of the fish. In many cases you should use a dry fly on calm slow deep watter so you can see the fly the whole time and if a fish makes a move for the fly you can see it because there will be a boil in the water thats why a dry fly is good in still watter so you can see all the action of the fly.

In my experience with fishing the wet fly and dry fly i really love fishing both types. But in my oppion i would have to say i like the dry fly better becasue you get more action out of your fly and can see if a fish moves for your fly at all. also it is really cool to see your fly floating alone the top of the river. but the wet dly has many good points also because you have no idea when the fish is going to take all you feel is a big hit on your fly and the watter boils, then you no you have him on. also when fishing a dry fly you are more lickley not to hook the fish that good because when a fish takes the dry fly you have to set the hook and many people pull the hook to hard and pull it right out of the fishes mouth or not set the hook hard enough and the hook comes loose

So the next time you are out fishing the beautyfull miramichi river and you get a chance to fish wet and dry fly try both types and let me no what you think?
