Wire Leader

what pound test line and wire leader should i use if i am trolling 8-10 inch diving lures?
Flight

im going fishing in the philippines, and my friend there show me the lures to bring. i bought some 10 inch rappala lures.

Trolling for wahoo off the San Diego long range boats the standard rig is 80+ pound line and 200+ pound wire leaders. This is for trolling the 10-inch Marauder lures, generally at 8-9 knots of speed. Rapalas (like the CD-18 and 22) have less drag in the water, but I would still not recommend trolling them on less than 50 pound line, unless the boat's moving considerably slower. If you need a wire leader for the fish's teeth, it should probably be twice the strength of your line.

You need considerably heavier line for trolling to stand up to the impact of the initial strike, even though you might have no problem landing the same size fish from a non-moving boat on considerably lighter line.

Of course, if you're looking at getting bigger fish (over 100 pounds), 50-pound test might not be enough.

You might check with your friend about tackle specifics, or the species you'll be targeting.

Using a wire leader when fishing?
Running Away

What is the benefit to useing a wire leader, when fishing in a river or casting from a dock? I dont really understand why you use a leader...

I assume your talking about freshwater fishing. Most of the time you dont need a wire leader unless your fishing for pike or bowfin or other fish with teeth. Most off the time you dont even need one for these fish. They dont bite the line, they bite the lure. If you were using a 7 inch jointed rapala for pike, you wouldnt need one but if you were using, say, a worm on a hook for pike, then there is a better chance of the pikes teeth to snap the line because of the smaller bait.i hope you understand that, i had trouble explaining

good luck!

if im using 20 pound test, what pound test wire leader should i use?
P1050665

also where can i find out how to connect my lure to the wire, and line to the wire also.
update- i will be trolling and casting 8- ten inch lures. Thanks so much for your time!!
update 2- ill also be doing some bottom fishing..

okay, you want to look at between 50 and 60lb leader, (between 2.5 and 3 times the line weight)

now the kind of connection depends on what kind of fishing you are doing, update that information, and i will be able to help you more

by the kind of fishing, i mean, are you fly fishing, are you drifting, jigging, trolling, pier fishing, just tell me what kind of fishing you are doing and i may be able to help you out some more :)

What knot to use in making wire leaders for musky?
Hello Dear

Also, tell me if you crimp as well as tie a knot in the leader. Which knots do you use for both Fluorocarbon and multi-strand wire. Anyone experience breakoffs with Fluro leaders? Thanks for your input....

Ive never had a problem with break offs of fluorocarbon and when i use wire all i do is crimp it, never knot it as crimps give you a neater and stronger hold on wire, for a simple fluorocarbon leader try

how long should my steel wire leader be?

Lets say i was targeting wahoo and couta

I use a 3' leader simply because the fish are subject to violent turns and their scales will cut a short tied line.

Best wire leader.?

In your opinion or exp. What is the best wire leader on the market with the lowest Visibility. I'm talking for fish like wahoo, barracuda, king fish, ect.

I prefer single-strand wire for wahoo for bait or casting jigs. It's thinner than the multi-strand wire of the same strength, and moves through the water much more smoothly, and you don't have a crimp making a lump in the leader just above the hook. You loop the ends with a haywire twist, which is nice and compact.

However, most San Diego long range crews don't like them because if you clip the tag end off after making the twist it can leave a very sharp and dangerous point. To remove the tag end cleanly, you don't clip it, but rather twist the wire until it shears off. The easiest way I've found to do this is with a small pair of vise grips -- clamp down on the tag end, and work it back and forth until it comes off. (If you try this with your fingers it's going to hurt.)

Another problem with single strand is kinking, but that's not a real problem with 12-18 inch leaders. Have half a dozen made up in advance, and you're good for a day's fishing.

For trolling, the heavy multi-strand wire leader with crimps is better, since visibility isn't as much of a factor, but flexibility and kink resistance matter more.
